What services are included in women’s health?
Women’s health services encompass a wide range of services, tests, and management of various conditions. While some conditions that fall under women’s healthcare can affect both men and women, such conditions often affect women differently than men and require specialized treatment. Some of these services and conditions include the following:
- Birth control and contraception
- Bone density tests
- Breast and cervical cancer
- Cardiovascular disease
- Domestic abuse and violence
- Gynecological care
- Hormonal disorders
- Irregular menstruation
- Pap smear
- Pelvic floor health
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Postpartum depression and care
- Prenatal and pregnancy care
- Severe menstrual pain
- Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment
- Urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Vaginal health
What are good questions to ask a gynecologist?
A visit to the gynecologist can be a very vulnerable and uncomfortable experience, and we fully acknowledge and respect your privacy and emotional health at Viva Health Center. For you to make the most of your visit to the gynecologist, we have compiled a list of helpful questions to ask that can provide you with more knowledge and confidence about your health:
- How should I properly clean my vagina?
- Does my vagina smell normal?
- Why are my menstrual cycles so painful or irregular?
- Why don’t I ever feel like having sex?
- How do I conduct a breast exam on my own?
- Why can’t I lose weight?
- Should I be concerned about my discharge?
- Is the bump near my vagina a cause for concern?
- What should I do to prepare for pregnancy?
- Is it possible to get pregnant while on your period?
- Are there any screenings or tests that I should get?
- Why is sex so painful?
Some of these questions will not apply to you, so don’t take this as anything more than suggestions to consider if the issues raised by the questions are relevant in your case. A gynecologist can help answer and solve any of the concerns listed above!
When should you visit a gynecologist?
You should make a visit to see your gynecologist at least once a year for annual screenings, especially if you are sexually active. These yearly screenings can test for cervical cancer, breast cancer, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other conditions that uniquely affect women. Usually, one appointment per year with your gynecologist is enough. However, some circumstances warrant an extra visit to the gynecologist. Other times to consider visiting your gynecologist would be if you are pregnant or planning on having a baby, experiencing abnormal changes in your period or irregular bleeding, approaching menopause, or any pain or discomfort in the vaginal area.
